Welcome to 2025
Y'all! I'm really proud of this month's print release: a pair of Belted Kingfishers. This bird has been on my "must carve" list for a few years now, and it's felt great to finally have some time to bring these birds to life. I'll also want to let you know about some fun events we have coming up-- including a busy upcoming weekend for us here at NSPH. Finally, I'm excited to share my creative focus for the year: Communities and how you can expect this
theme to show up in my business for 2025.

What's New: Belted Kingfishers
Above, This "gradient"edition will be contain 50 prints, and will feature the blended inking technique shown here.
Belted Kingfishers are such incredible birds. Their scruffy heads and striking bold patterns make them a joy to sketch and carve. One thing I love about Belted kingfishers is how the female is more colorful than the male (a rare occurence in birds!) These two prints feature a male (left) and female (right) fishing, flying, and perching admidst the loblolly pines that so often dot our lakeshores here in the southeast. For this set, my plan is to do two editions, each exploring different inking techniques. The set above will feature a gradient on the birds, but I'll also do an edition of 45 prints where the birds are solid. We had a lively debate on my instagram about which version y'all prefered, and the results were almost evenly split!)
Pricing for each print: Limited Edition Print + custom, acid free 13x19 matboard- $109 each. Limited Edition Print + custom, acid free 16x24 matboard- $129 each. I'm making these prints avaliable to my newsletter subcribers before I bring them to shows or post them on my website! If you'd like to pre-order one (or a set), email me with the following information: - Which prints you would like? (The left print is called "The Kingfisher's Perch" and the right print is called "Kingfisher in Flight.") You can also reserve a set of 2.
- Which version you would like? (Gradient vs Solid)
- What size matboards you would like (13x19 of 16x24.)
Important: Due to supply chain issues with my matboard, these preorders could take up to a month to ship. I'll reserve prints in the order y'all email me!
Above, this photo shows what the "solid" edition of 45 prints will look like.

Creative Focus for 2025: Communities
As I start each year, I like to pick a theme that I'm going to highlight in my work for the next 12 months. In the past I've picked themes like "pollinators" or "predators," and worked to share my enthusiasm for those
topics through my artwork over the course of that year.
For 2025, the theme I have chosen is "Communities." Whether you're speaking about the inter-relationships between the species of our region, or our people, cities, and spaces, I'm heading into 2025 with this rock solid belief: Communities are more important now than ever. Here's how you can expect this theme to show up in my work, and in my business in the coming year: Artwork:
In the artwork that I make, I'll strive to showcase communities of plants and animals and engage in storytelling on how they are interdependent on each other.
This new pattern, "Bog
Garden" is a good example of a community of plants that all require specific conditions to live and thrive in the wild.
We are also going to make an effort to attend the Durham Craft Market every single week for 2025 (weather permitting). I want y'all to be able to depend on us if you need a gift, a piece for your homes, or just a friendly conversation and little art in your life that week. I'll continue to work my favorite
art festivals and holiday shows as well.
Connecting with y'all at shows is one of the best parts of my job, and I'm going to double down on that this year.
Website/Communications: This year I'm also moving forward on what has been a long time goal of mine:
Launching a Blog on the New South Pattern House Website. I'll be highlighting customer testimonials, printmaking process deep dives, wildlife inspiration, and much more. As many folks are taking breaks from social media, I hope this can also serve to keep folks connected between monthly newsletters.

testimonial blog post!
I've also added a feature on my website where y'all can upload photos of your framed pieces along with your reviews. I often get to see the beautiful and creative ways y'all style your NSPH pieces because you email them to me, but I think others would
love to see your pics too. I hope that y'all can inspire each other as much as you inspire me!
Above: I'm excited to work through the remaining editions of this Red Wolf block, and to continue to raise money to protect this endangered species.
Finally, I'll continue to try and leave a postive impact on my community through my printmaking work. I'm trying to get out in the community more with live demonstrations this year, continue my open studio events, and I've also identified a few
ways to work with teens. In terms of fundraising, I'm going to keep raising money to protect endangered species, and I also want to do some work aimed at supporting Western NC after the damage caused by Helene. |
As I look to the year ahead, the thing I'm looking forward to most is connecting with y'all around this place that we all love so much. Thank you for being part of the NSPH community! -Katie
