It's been a wild month here at New South Pattern House! I had so much fun seeing many of you at the Artsplosure festival, and--in my personal life-- I closed out the month by celebrating my little sister's wedding!

About the design:  Lately I've been obsessing over willow trees-- specifically our native black willows (Salix nigra).  They are amazing incubators for biodiversity, an early season food source for pollinators, and their roots play a vital role holding stream banks in place. When I set out to capture an Osprey hunting over a freshwater lake, I couldn't resist sneaking a Black Willow into the piece as well. In this print, the Osprey is hunting for black crappie, and diving amongst flooded willow saplings.

Above: Longleaf Pine

I often share with y'all highlights from my walks in the woods outside my studio here in Hillsborough. But, this spring, I was lucky enough to get out into a completely new ecosystem-- The longleaf pine forest. When I'm planning a new piece, I love to take my own reference photographs whenever possible, and Sean and I were actually able to sneak away for a long weekend on the coast, specially to photograph Longleaf Pine and Bald Cypress trees, and observe the animals and habitats created by them.

This week I've finally gotten some time to revisit the photos we took and I'm remembering just how adorable this little brown headed nuthatch was!  I've been caught up in a research flurry, scrambling to learn everything I can about longleaf pines, and the world that grows inside of them.  Expect to see this come out in my work over the next few months!

Above:  These Spotted Turtles appeared to be battling! Not sure what they were up to, but it was amazing to see.
