Studio Update August 31st, 2023 |
Hello from Hillsborough! It's been an insanely busy August, and I've got lots to catch y'all up on. I'm soaking in some amazing press highlights and awards, launching a new line of open-edition mini prints, and adjusting my pricing on my small work to better value my time. I'm also gearing up
for Fall festivals, and it's going to be an INCREDIBLE lineup of shows. We'll get into all of it, but first, I want to give y'all a little discount code, which is good for $5 off any purchase on my website from now through Sept 9th. This is just a little extra cash in your pocket because I love you. Use the code VIP5BUCKS at checkout! Best, Katie Katie Hayes Printmaker New South Pattern House Press, Awards, and Highlights: I was thrilled to receive the "Jerry Miller Best in Show award for Printmaking" at the 2023 Cary Lazy Daze festival. There were nearly 300 artists at this festival, and they divided us into 7 groups based on our mediums, and awarded a "Best in Show" prize for each group. I was
so proud to be selected, and the best part of this was meeting Jerry Miller himself. He’s the artist that originally started the Lazy Daze festival, and he was super kind, supportive, and inspiring. I was also delighted this month to see my patterns featured on the COVER of Spoonflower's Autumn Lookbook! I've been thinking of featuring more wallpaper highlights in this newsletter, and this seems like a great opportunity to start. The Pattern used on the wallpaper and bedspread is called "Hitchcock Woods". It's inspired by my grandmother's garden in Aiken South Carolina, which backed up to a wild area called Hitchcock woods.
I used Magnolia, Camelias, and Azalea's for my inspiration as well as a tangle of wisteria vines, and other botanicals in the mix. The birds are northern flickers, because my grandma was obsessed with birds and kept detailed notes of which species visited her yard each year. You can order the pattern as Wallpaper, Fabric, or Home Decor here. Finally, I was
grateful to be featured in this article, by the Orange County Arts Commission's Arshia Simkin. This was such a beautiful write-up, and I'm grateful to OCAC for this deep dive into my work. Adjustments |
The Limited Edition print above features a Pine Warbler and Loblolly Pine. Starting this month, I'm adjusting the prices on my small works, such as my limited edition mini-prints, and my hand pressed bookmarks and greeting cards. The prices
on my large works will stay the same. Limited Edition 8x10 Mini Prints: New Price: $32 Old price: $29 Hand Pressed Bookmarks and Greeting Cards: New Price: $9 each or 3 for $21 Old Price: $8 each or 3 for $20 NEW: "Open Edition" 8x10 Mini Prints: Will range from $25-$29 and will also be available
as greeting cards. To order, click on the greeting card design you like, and click the drop down option to order it with an 8x10 matboard. Above: Mycelium Moonlight. Avaliable as a card, and an open edition 8x10 miniprint here. The reason for these changes are the increased costs of my matboards, compostable sleves, and papers that I've been seeing over the past few years, and also the increasingly complicated techniques I'm using to create my pieces. Thanks for supporting me as I value my time! In the Studio: Puzzle Piece Printmaking Speaking of complicated inking techniques for my mini-prints, I thought y'all might like to see the "puzzle piece" process for my full color Pine Warbler Print. One of the most common questions I get about my work
is how I achieve the bright colors, and gradients you see on the finished prints. Puzzle piecing is one of my favorite techniques for this. I separately hand-ink and piece the carved pieces together like this for each print! This video doesn't show the inking-- just the process of each piece coming to together. As you can see, it's quite time consuming but satisfying! That's all for now, but keep an eye out in the next few weeks for some new print-drops, including a large Osprey piece I've been working on, and also some new mini-prints for your holiday gifting needs. Talk to y'all soon, Katie |
