Studio Update June 27th,
2023 |
Hey Friends! Summer is rolling along, things are heating up in the
printmaking studio. In addition to this month's print release, (a jumbo pitcher plant with mid-century vibes,) I also have several new mini-prints in the queue, so keep an eye out on instagram as I release those throughout the
month of July! We'll be bringing all this new work to a full slate of Summer/Fall shows and this newsletter will tell you exactly where to find us! Finally, I've got a
new staff member for you to meet. Her name is Emily, and (spoiler alert) she's awesome. Scroll down so I can tell you all about it. Yours, Katie Katie Hayes Printmaker New South Pattern House What's New: Mid-Century Botanical, "Yellow
Pitcher Plant" |
When I told you I was going to be incorporating more predators into my work this year, I bet you didn't think I was talking about plants, did you? I was recently at
the NC Botanical Garden* and I was just really struck by their collection of pitcher plants. They are so iconically "North Carolina" and the beautiful veining on them just screams "block print!" I couldn't resist :) I decided to tackle a Yellow Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia flava), done in my mid-century style, with bronze and green geometrical accents. These prints will be matted up to an 18x24 inch size, and will be part of an edition of 70 prints. I currently have about 14 of these beauties in stock, each one signed by me with the common and scientific name. I'm offering this print for pre-orders to y'all before I post them for sale online (on 6/29), or bring them to my summer
shows. I'll be reserving prints in the order that folks email me, so let me know ASAP if you'd like to pre-order one! "Yellow Pitcher Plant, Sarracenia flava."- Cost: $118 Size, 18x24. Sizes include custom, acid free matboard. *The NC Botanical Garden is going to start carrying some of our stationery line in their gift shop! It should be up and running with them in the next few

There's a new face at New South Pattern House! I'm excited to introduce Emily Cowan, as our Production Coordinator and Retail Liaison. You'll be seeing Emily starting this summer as she helps Dhara and I with events, but
she'll also be working behind the scenes to service our retail accounts and vet manufacturing partners for the small batch goods y'all have been requesting :) Emily has combined experience in fine arts (with a Master's Degree in Art History) and ethical manufacturing (most recently working as a senior lead for Spoonflower's Durham factory.) If you see Emily at an event near you, please welcome her! In the Studio: Slowing it
Down Most of the time, when I make process videos for y'all, I speed everything up. Today I thought I'd show you a real-time inking of my newest print. The first time you ink up a block, it's pretty magical-- you've spent days drawing and carving this piece, and then you see it all come together and see what you've got to show for all that work. Here's me test-inking the Yellow Pitcher Plant carving in order to see what flaws and imperfections I still need to correct. At the end of this video, I also threw in a couple of pulls of the final prints so you can see how it all comes together. For this block, I tried out a few color combinations before I settled on the bronze and green accents for the main edition. if you like the bronze only version better and want to
order one-- email me-- I made 5 of them! Enjoy! As New South Pattern House continues to
grow, I am just so grateful to our amazing customers. Thanks for helping me create this work that highlights our beautiful region, and being along with me as I dream big for the future. I can't wait to show y'all what's next for us! -Katie |
