Studio Update, February, 23rd, 2023 |
|
Guess what? I learned a new trick last week. I’ve been challenging myself to see if I could make a "sunburst" effect in my folk instrument block prints. After lots of trial and error, I think I've got it dialed in. Scroll down to the "in the studio"
section to see a process video for how I created this look. I've MISSED y'all, and I'm so excited to see folks again at my first show of the year- March 4th in Durham. Scroll down to see my Spring 2023 lineup of events. Finally, there's a new "Carbon Neutral Order" option on my website that I'll talk you through below, so read on! What's New: "Sunburst" Instrument Prints |
As some of you know, I grew up around folk music. I love to play
guitar, and my ideal Saturday night is a bunch of folks sitting aorund a fire, singing John Prine songs off-key, and passing songs and instruments around. For the past few years I've been working on a "southern folk instrument" series of block prints. Each print is named after an iconic song, and features an instrument, with
elements from the song incorporated. So, for example, my newest print (featured above) is called "Blackberry Blosssom." It features a sunburst style mandolin, surrounded by blackberries, and flanked on either side by fruit-loving cedar waxwings. It is named after the wonderful song, "blackberry blossom.” I also did a handful of guitar prints in the same
style from my "Wildwood Flower" block to match this new print. (see below.) I'm giving my email subscribers the first chance to
buy these prints before I make them available for sale to the general public (on Saturday, February 25th.) I'll be reserving prints in the order that folks email me, so click below and let me know if you'd like to pre-order one! checkout this month. One of my business goals for this year is to deepen my commitment to sustainability, and I'm happy to announce the option to offset the carbon footprint from your order during checkout. I've partnered with a company called EcoCart to make this happen. Here's what a cart on my website now looks like: As you can see above, you can remove the carbon neutral
order option if you choose. If you want to read about the projects it funds, you can click on the "i" icon on the bottom right hand of the page. I'm still rolling out this program, so let me know if it seems tricky to use. To entice y'all to try it out, I'm offering a freeshipping code FREESHIP23 for orders over $35. Let me pick up the shipping bill for you, so you can try out this carbon neutral option, and let's see how it goes. Here's a video of me inking up my new "Blackberry Blossom" Print. This block was carved as a single piece, and then cut into 10 individual pieces. I then mixed my colors using 7 different ink colors, 3 separate inking plates, and 5 rollers. This piece was quite time intensive, but I ended up loving the final piece. (This video is sped up significantly, in real life the process is much slower
:)! Spring is coming and I'm entering festival season rested, full of creativity, and brimming with new ideas for prints I'd like to make for y'all. Thanks for sticking with me
through all the seasons, and supporting my work. I am so grateful! -Katie |
